CHAPTER NINE

King Rasmus beamed down at the group from the throne. “You have done well. I trust you’re ready to rescue Lady Briarthorn from the clutches of Duke Ravenstorm?”

Looking refreshed with her cheeks slightly rosy, Cassie replied for them all, “Born ready.”

Tim leaned over to whisper in JaKobi’s ear, “That’s how you do it.”

“She’s been working on it.” The ember wizard looked pleased. “Nineties movie nights have paid off.”

Nodding at her answer, King Rasmus continued, “We’ve assembled the spell that will bring down the barrier, but first I would like to give each of you something in return for your efforts.”

Prince Desmond signaled, and four guards lumbered into the room with a massive golden chest between them. “A small token of our gratitude for your continued service to the kingdom.”

Lorelei tried to hide her smile. “It’s a good thing they brought out the loot.”

“You have no idea.” ShadowLily looked relieved to avoid the “the king is a cheapskate” battle that was looming.

Cassie smiled as she looked at the prince. “I was starting to wonder about you, but this is all I’ve ever wanted.”

Running forward, Cassie wrapped her arms around the chest as if she were giving it a giant hug. “Bō staff of the Relentless Mongoose. Boosts my dodge and parry skills, adds a little damage over time effect. In short, it’s fucking awesome.” Turning, Cassie bowed to the prince. “It’s exactly what I wanted and as good as the beer.”

Desmond returned the bow and moved back to his spot next to his father. “You’ve earned it many times over, and all of you are welcome to stop by my study whenever you visit the castle.”

“By study, he means a bar with books.” Rasmus managed to look amused and disappointed all at once.

JaKobi grinned. “It sounds amazing.”

“I think you’ll find it has rather fewer books than you’d imagine.” Prince Desmond shrugged off his father’s displeasure with an award-winning smile.

“And far more wine.” Cassie laughed and pointed at the chest. “Come on, people, it's calling your names.”

Lorelei was next to move toward the chest. “Bow of the Vengeful Spirit. Adds damage and five seconds of increased speed after using my movement ability.”

“That’s awesome.” Tim imagined Quick Feet wearing off but still having a little bonus time before he was back to moving at average speed and knew it would come in handy in all kinds of situations. He turned to ShadowLily. “Ladies first.”

“That’s not how I remember it going.” She winked at him as she moved to the chest.

“You got in the tub first,” Tim replied casually as if they weren’t late to the meeting with the king because he got carried away getting clean.

ShadowLily touched the chest. “What can I say? I felt dirty.” She spun a new set of daggers around in her hands. “Whoa, these are nice. Daggers of the Poison Fang.”

Flipping them to test the weight, she grinned. “These are going to be awesome. I’m sending Ernie a message to make me some new poison so it’s ready for later.
